What is Nitro Coffee?
What is Nitro Coffee? We had to ask because honestly, it sounded scary. After a little research we found out that it is just cold brew added to a keg and infused with nitrogen gas. So hold up... what is nitrogen gas? It is a colorless, odorless gas. So... gas has been mixed with beverages for years including beers and sodas! But in this case we are switching from a more traditional carbon dioxide to nitrogen.
The reason for this is because carbon dioxide mixes with the liquid and the nitrogen creates a different texture! Woah. The result of mixing this gas with the cold brew ends up giving the coffee a frothy bubbly brew -- a brew that is more similar to a dark beer. The gas ends up changing the cold brew's profile.
The foam that is created when you mix those two together mimics a sweeter taste! FACT! You are tricking yourself to thinking there was sugar added. The question of is Nitro Coffee healthier is a vague one. The thing is it has a richer, creamer texture and even mimics a flavor profile -- all without adding milk or sugar to the brew. So at the end of the day if you were one to add 4 packets of sugar and heavy cream you are skipping on some major calories now! Is this a trend? Great final question.
The art of adding gas to a beverage is one we have watched grow for years!! I mean look at the soda steam. We are now making seltzer in our homes and nitro brews are on the shelves. Is it a trend thought? We will have to check back with you but the art is solid! Wanna read about a new trend we found out on the streets in NYC? See here for the Cold Brew Shaved Ice we tried!
