Update: Congratulations Jordan Kraski

When I think of coffee, I think of my father. Ever since I was in elementary school my dad would pick me up from school and we would go to a local coffee shop. He would get a cup of coffee, and I’d order a hot cocoa. This weekly ritual between my father and I was always something I looked forward to. At the time I did not realize the full depth of what he wanted to accomplish with those coffee dates, yet I now know that this was his way of staying connected with me. As I entered high school, things slowly began to change. I became busier with school, sports, and friends and our coffee dates became less frequent.

Looking back on these experiences of sharing coffee with my father, I realize this was his way of sharing something he enjoyed with me. To this day, we still try to continue this coffee date whenever we can. It’s most common for me to stop by the fire station where he works and bring him a cup of coffee just as an excuse to say hello. Even though we do not get to that coffee shop as regularly as we’d like, my father continues to make me a cup of coffee in the morning and we stand in our kitchen and enjoy it together for a few moments before I head out the door. This ritual brings a warm feeling inside- kind of like the coffee- as I remember all those times we were able to sit together and really enjoy our beverages and connect.

You see, it isn’t only the coffee that has made me a better person, but the memories I have created while drinking it. For us, sharing something we both enjoy is not only having a beverage but an experience. It brings us back together and provides the opportunity to reconnect regularly. Coffee has created the opportunity for the time I have spent with my father which has given me the strength and confidence I needed to become the person I am today. I’ve been given time and attention that I need to be assured that no matter what – I am an important person, I am loved and am capable of making my own decisions and feeling confident with them; not needing the reassurance from others to feel safe and secure. I grew up receiving that validation and still continue to get it from him with our time spent together drinking coffee. For that I am a better person.

I will be rowing on the women’s crew team next fall at The University of Louisville. I hope your organization will award me your scholarship so I may graduate with minimal student debt and look to spending more time on creating connections with the people I love most; hopefully through a cup of coffee.
