Coffee and Sexual Health

Is the Hayes Code still a thing?

If you're looking to keep your love life lively, you might want to start with a cup of coffee. The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston recently found that the equivalent of two to three cups of coffee per day are less likely to experience erectile dysfunction than those who consume less (or no) caffeine.

On the surface, this makes sense. For one thing, current research points to coffee lowering the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, both of which are prime culprits in erectile dysfunction. Dr. David Samadi, Lenox Hill Hospital's chair of urology, pointed out another reason for this phenomenon. While he recently cautioned CBS News that the research couldn't be characterized as conclusive, he added that "hat scientists think is happening here is that coffee and caffeine are causing cavernous smooth muscle tissue (found in the penis) to relax, allowing more blood flow to the area and leading to improved erectile function."

In addition to Dr. Samadi's warning on the research, there's another cautionary note to be sounded. The findings held true for overweight and obese men and those with hypertension, but not for those with diabetes (one of the strongest risk factors for erectile dysfunction). Ergo, while coffee can help to ward off diabetes, it won't be of much help if you've already got diabetes and erectile dysfunction.

We're trying to keep it classy here.
You might wonder whether anyone's taken the time to study the effects of coffee on women's sexual health (we did). The research here, unsurprisingly, is even more inconclusive than the research regarding the effects on men. While a study on coffee and the female libido was undertaken in 2006 suggests that there's a correlation between sex drive and coffee in women, the study was conducted on rats and not human subjects.

While the research regarding the link between coffee and sexual performance is still inconclusive, the research is nonetheless promising. Hopefully the coming years will see further studies that will provide more conclusive proof. In the meantime, if you'll excuse us there's a cup of Union Square Dark with our name on it...
